Altered cell signaling in growth regulation is a prerequisite for cancer development. Our group studies growth factor signaling mechanisms and the translocation of protein growth factors into cells. We find that, in addition to the well known mechanism of signaling through the tyrosine kinase receptor, fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF-1) needs to be translocated into the cell to fulfill the signal. Translocation of FGF-1 into the nucleus is necessary for full stimulatory effect of the growth factor on DNA synthesis.

Our aim is to elucidate membrane/nuclear translocation mechanisms and to identify intracellurar targets for FGF-1. In elucidating the molecular mechanisms for cell proliferation, we plan to investigate possible targets for diagnostic or therapeutic exploitation, together with researchers from other disciplines within CCB.
